The goal
Introducing students to the possibilities of using Earth's artificial satellites to solve basic geodetic tasks of positioning, determination of the gravitational field and geodynamics.
The outcome
Students will be introduced to the basic theory of satellite motion and the types of satellite measurements that can be used for positioning, gravitational field determination and geodynamic research. The acquired knowledge will enable students to easily master the possibilities of satellite systems and techniques used in geodesy, with a focus on the widely represented satellite system NAVSTAR GPS.
Contents
Definition, tasks and basic concept of satellite geodesy. Reference coordinate and time systems of satellite geodesy. The movement of electromagnetic waves through the Earth's atmosphere. Two body problem. Kepler orbital elements. Types of satellite orbits. Gravitational and non-gravitational perturbations. Satellites used in geodesy. Absolute and relative positioning. Trilateral and Doppler positioning. Positioning models using pseudoranges. Technological development of satellite systems for global positioning. NAVSTAR GPS system architecture. GPS signal structure. Measurement of code and phase pseudoranges. Errors in code and phase measurements. Functional model of original GPS measurements. Functional model of linear combinations. Functional model of frequency combinations. Stochastic GPS model. Architecture of permanent GPS station networks. International standards. GLONASS and GALILEO satellite systems. Satellite laser ranging (SLR).
Methods of teaching
Classes are conducted through lectures during which students are introduced to the general basics of satellite motion and satellite measurements, as well as details of the architecture and use of the NAVSTAR GPS satellite system for solving basic geodetic tasks.
