The goal
To teach students to independently determine astrometric quantities using modern measurement techniques.
The outcome
Students will be able to independently plan and perform astrogeodetic measurements, and to process and analyze those measurements, with the goal of determining astrogeodetic quantities.
Contents
Theoretical lessons: Significance and application of astrometric methods in geodesy. Basic concepts and principles. Basic equations of spherical trigonometry. Division of astrometric methods. Zenith and azimuth methods. The most favorable observation conditions. The position of the celestial body. Ephemeris. Development of astrometric instruments. Modern measuring instruments for astrometry. The apparent motion of the Sun. Measurement of astronomical azimuth by observing the Sun. Time maintenance. International services and timekeeping systems. Measurement of astronomical azimuth by observation of Polaris. Time in astronomy. Julian period. Calendar. Simultaneous determination of astronomical latitude and longitude by the method of equal zenith distances. Classical methods for determining astronomical latitude. Classical methods for determining time and astronomical longitude. Simultaneous determination of astronomical latitude and longitude by observing zenith stars. Exercises: Using basic equations of spherical trigonometry in astrogeodetic determinations. Examples of a priori error calculation. Selection of stars for certain astrogeodetic methods. Introduction to instruments for astrogeodetic measurements. Practical determination of astronomical azimuth by observation of the Sun. Processing of data obtained by observing the Sun. Practical determination of astronomical azimuth by observation of Polaris.
